Arturo Larena is an environmental journalist
Founder (2009) and director of EFEverde.
Chosen one of the hundred most influential and committed Latinos in climate action (2020 and 2021).
He was previously director of EFEfuturo (until 2018).
Has been delegate of EFE in Extremadura, Madrid and Galicia.
Teacher at Gabo Foundation, formerly the New Ibero-American Journalism Foundation (FNPI).
Member of the advisory council of the International Network of Writers for Earth.
Awarded with the National Environmental Prize.
BBVA Foundation for Biodiversity Conservation award.
WWF Gold Panda award, as one of the five Spaniards who have contributed the most to environmental culture through the media.
Professional activity
Since 1990 he has worked as a journalist for Agencia EFE, where he has held various positions.

1990-1998. Editor in the Culture, Health, Education, Science and Environment sections.

1998-1999. Delegate of the EFE Agency in Extremadura.

1999-2006. Head of the EFE Regional News Service in the Community of Madrid.

2006-2009. General Delegate of the EFE Agency in Galicia, where he launched the EFE news service in Galician.

In 2009, he developed the creation and implementation of a global environmental journalism platform that resulted in EFEverde.
Before joining EFE, he worked at Cadena SER, RNE, Radio Oeste, the newspaper Ya, the magazines Mucho Más (Grupo Axel Springer) and Conocer (Zeta), as well as collaborating in publications such as El Independiente, Época or Mía (G +J).

From 1998 to 2002 he was president of the Association of Environmental Information Journalists of Spain (APIA), an entity of which he was a founding member in 1995. In November 1998 he received, from the hands of SAR Don Felipe de Borbón, the prize awarded to this entity by the National Environmental Congress.

From 2001 to 2006 he participated in the journalistic talk show El Foro on Radio Madrid (Cadena SER), directed by Miguel Ángel Oliver (until 2003) and Javier Manzano. He participated for several years in the Madridiario.es journalistic talk show, directed by Constantino Mediavilla on Canal 33 TV. He also collaborated on the interview program El Círculo a Primera Hora on Telemadrid.

From 2007 to 2009 he participated in the Faladoiro gathering on Correo TV in Santiago de Compostela.
Training and specialization
Arturo Larena has a degree in Information Sciences from the Complutense University / CEU San Pablo, where he also studied Public Relations and Advertising.
​
He specialized in Scientific and Environmental Journalism at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones CientÃficas (CSIC) —the largest public research organization in Spain— and received a scholarship from the US Government within its International Visitors Program, where he deepened his knowledge of information environmental, scientific and the Hispanic media.
He is the author of a huge journalistic production in the environmental field and one of the promoters in Spain of this informative specialty.
Creation of scholarships
As president of APIA (1998-2002), he promoted the specialization of young journalists with the creation of the first Award-scholarship for a young environmental journalist through collaboration between APIA, EFE Foundation and Tetra Pak. In 2003 he promoted the first four Scholarships for Specialization in Local Environmental Journalism as a collaboration between FIDA, APIA, EFE-Comunidad de Madrid, EFE Foundation, RNE and Telemadrid and in 2004/2005 of the first Scholarships in Journalism on Energy and Sustainable Development between the EFE Foundation, APIE and Red Eléctrica.

As a delegate from Extremadura, he promoted environmental information and the creation of the first Scholarship for Specialization in Environmental Journalism and Nuclear Information between the EFE Foundation and the CNA.
​
In 2007, he promoted from Galicia the first EFE-Fundación Biodiversidad Scholarships for Autonomous Environmental Journalism and together with the Secretary of Equality of the Xunta the I Scholarships for Journalism and Equality.

Throughout his career he has worked to promote the environmental specialization of young journalists.
Awards
Arturo Larena has received numerous awards throughout his professional career, including the following:

National Award for Environmental Journalism 2005 (Ministry of the Environment), an award for which he also obtained the Special Mention of the Jury in 1994.

BBVA Foundation Award to the Dissemination of Knowledge and Sensitization in Conservation of Biodiversity 2009.

Panda de Oro Award for Communication and Environmental Awareness 2011 (extraordinary distinction granted by the WWF, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of this NGO).

Reward Climate Positive 2021 granted by Green Cross UK, the British section of the NGO founded by Mikhail Gorbachev.
